Worth knowing
What a percentage is
A percent is a hundredth. 15% of a number means the number divided by 100 and multiplied by 15 — or, more simply, multiplied by 0.15.
You can do it in your head
10% is the decimal point moved one place left. From there 20% is double, 5% is half, and 15% is 10% plus 5%. The page shows you the neighbours precisely so you can check it yourself.
Frequently asked questions
Can I use a comma for decimals?
Yes. Both 7.5 and 7,5 work — the page understands either and writes back the form your language uses.
Do percentages above 100 work?
Yes. 150% of a number is the number plus half of it again.
How do I work out a discount?
For the final price after a discount there is a separate tool, which takes the percentage off and gives you the amount to pay.
Is the result rounded?
To two decimals, which is what money uses. A whole result is shown whole.
