Worth knowing
Why leap years change the count
A year has 365 days, until every fourth one, which has 366. Over a lifetime that adds up to more than a week. This is why days lived cannot be found by multiplying years by 365 — they are counted from one date to the other, with every 29 February in its place.
Born on 29 February
In common years that day does not exist, so the birthday moves to 1 March — the convention calendars and most people use. This calculator counts it the same way.
Frequently asked questions
How is exact age calculated?
Completed years first, then the months left over, then the days. Days are not divided by 365, which is why the figure matches the one a clerk writes on a form.
Why do the year pages show two ages?
Because a birth year does not say which day. Someone born in 1990 is 35 or 36, depending on whether their birthday has passed this year.
Is the date I enter stored?
No. The answer is computed on request, the page is kept out of every shared cache, and the site keeps nothing about its visitors.
Can I find my age on a past date?
Not yet — this calculator counts against today. A separate tool for the difference between two dates is coming.
